We sat down recently with our director, Seamus Curran to catch up and find out more about Terracon.
Hailing from Edendork, County Tyrone, Seamus is an experienced mechanical engineer, having worked throughout the UK, Ireland and Australia. From developing airport ground support equipment (GSE) through to mobile and static concrete batching plants for blue chip companies, Seamus has seen his fair share of the industry from different corners of the world.
Terracon was founded in 2020, whilst Seamus was working on the prestigious Westgate Tunnel Project in Melbourne. Making the move back to NI to focus on Terracon, it was his experience in the industry that made him identify the evident gaps, and that gap was the need for modernisation. From there, Terracon set out to develop a range of modular and mobile equipment originally focused on concrete batching, with innovation at its core.
“There was a dissatisfaction with the products that were on the market at that time, they had grown outdated and existing players weren’t willing to develop new or improved products to meet the needs of customers. I saw the opening for modernisation and from that, Terracon was established.”
Terracon developed its first machine during the pandemic, with it being sold in February 2021. A MS60 mobile silo for Shannon Valley Group, designed with strength, durability and serviceability in mind. The MS60 provided Shannon Valley with a solution for onsite storage and conveying of dry bulk powders such as cement, lime and GGBS to onsite continuous mixing plant (pugmill) for a soil stabilisation application.
Since then, Terracon has expanded operations into designing and manufacturing innovative mixing, batching and blending equipment, used globally in construction, recycling and environmental applications.
Along with his leadership role in Terracon, Seamus is the principal engineer leading the development of new products, liaising with new and existing customers to deliver innovative solutions for their businesses. The growth of Terracon has been on a positive trajectory since 2020, with the recent opening of Terracon’s 20,000 sqft. manufacturing facility in Magherafelt, Co. Derry. This follows on from significant investment into the latest manufacturing equipment, Terracon is retaining its leading status in the marketplace.
“We are delighted to have opened our latest manufacturing facility in Magherafelt. This investment into a new factory demonstrates the company’s confidence in its business model and the market. We’ve been able to create more jobs which in turn has increased our capacity ensuring that we are maximising all opportunities in the marketplace.”
So, what does the future hold for Terracon?
“We’re continuing to grow, placing strong focus on our product development line. We’ve got a new machine launching in early 2023, which has been in development for the last 2 years. Our goal is to continuously improve our offering, and in the process raise expectations within the industry. It’s full steam ahead for Terracon and we’re excited to see where it takes us.”
